Types of coverage
What types of life insurance are there?
Most policies fall into two broad families: term life, which covers you for a set period, and permanent life (such as whole life), which is designed to last your entire life and can build cash value. Within those families there are several variations.
What is term life insurance?
Term life covers you for a set number of years, often 10, 20, or 30. If you pass away during the term, your beneficiaries receive the benefit; if the term ends, coverage generally expires. It's typically the lower-cost option for a given benefit amount.
What is whole life insurance?
Whole life is a form of permanent coverage designed to last your entire life as long as premiums are paid, and it typically builds cash value over time that you may be able to borrow against or withdraw under certain conditions. Premiums are generally higher than term for the same benefit amount.
What is final expense insurance?
Final expense insurance is generally a type of permanent (whole life) policy with a smaller benefit amount, often used to help cover funeral, burial, and other end-of-life costs. The exact features and amounts vary by carrier.
How are term and whole life different?
In general, term coverage is temporary and usually lower in cost with no cash value, while whole life is permanent and builds cash value but typically costs more for the same benefit. The right fit depends on how long you need coverage and your budget.
Cost & eligibility (general)
How much does life insurance cost?
It varies widely based on factors like your age, health, the type of policy, and the amount of coverage. As a general rule, term coverage tends to cost less than permanent coverage for the same benefit amount. A real person from our team can help you compare.
How much coverage do I need?
There's no single right answer. A common approach is to add up what your family would need to replace (income, debts, a mortgage, final expenses) and subtract what's already in place, like savings and any coverage you already have. We can help you estimate a number that fits.
Do I need a medical exam to get coverage?
It depends on the carrier and the policy: some require a medical exam and some don't. Requirements vary by carrier, state, age, and health, so it's best to check the specifics of any policy you're considering.
Can I get coverage if I have a health condition?
Possibly. Eligibility, coverage, and pricing vary by carrier, state, age, and health, and many people with health conditions are still able to find coverage, though the terms differ. A real person from our team can help you understand your options.
